San Diego is playing host to the 2011 AAF (American Advertising Federation) National Conference and enlisted the talented Grant Reinero from Geary Interactive to create the video announcement to be debuted next week in Orlando. I was enlisted to shoot stills of Wade Wallenpaupack - Aspiring Stock Photography Model. The video pretty much says it all:

I stumbled upon this scene during my travels along of the US Mexican Border fence a few weeks ago. I was crossing a small bridge just west of Old Calexico and this structure in the water caught my eye. So I pulled off to find the best vantage point. When I photograph I tend to be pretty focused and in my own world. Especially when I work with my older film cameras. But there’s always a part of me that is conscious of where I am and what’s around me. Survival instinct, self-preservation, whatever it is, it’s always there: floating around in my sub conscious whenever I’m shooting in an unfamiliar locale. As I’m framing up this shot and trying some different angles I become aware of a low rumble from a pretty beefy engine. Not that I would notice this sound in and of itself, but I realize it’s been idling somewhere behind me for a little while now. It’s not an unusual sound given the terrain. It’s just there and I’m aware of it. So I get back to my task at hand. Eventually I’ve got something I like and I start to head back to the car. On the way I notice a super cool old rusty gear lying in the dirt. I pick it up to check it out and continue walking back to the car. Just then, I pick up on the sound of the engine again because it was now coming toward me. Instead of running back to the car like a total freak I turn to acknowledge the driver. Now if you’ve ever been to this area there’s one thing you’ll notice immediately. The US Border Patrol is omnipresent. And that’s exactly who was keeping a watchful eye on me. As he approached in his low growling SUV I wasn’t sure what to expect. Was I “allowed” to be shooting there? Was I shooting something sensitive to immigration? The officer rolled up slowly and I walked over to greet him.
“Where are you from? Are you from around here?” he asked.
“No. San Diego. I’m a photographer,” I said, waving my hand westward and stating the obvious.
“Do you know about this river?”
“No, should I?”
“They say it’s the most polluted river in the US. It flows directly north from Mexico. I wouldn’t touch anything around it,” he said, looking at the rusty gear in my hand.

It turns out this is the New River (Rio Nuevo) and it does in fact flow directly north out of Mexicali into the United States. It is referred to as the most polluted river of its size in the US. The river flows north through Baja California into the US (at this point) and another 66 miles into the Salton Sea. The New River’s flow is composed of waste from agricultural and chemical runoff from the farm industry, sewage form Mexicali, and manufacturing plants operating in Mexico.

I kept the gear anyway. I just scrubbed it, and my hands, thoroughly…

I did this shot in the courtyard of our studio during my 366|08 project. I really liked the shot a lot, but have had mixed reviews. Some people weren't that crazy about it...others shared my affinity for it. About a year ago, Dec '08 I believe, I entered it in a photo contest called the Black & White Spider Awards It looked like a prestigious contest with lots of great B & W work and a nice line-up of judges. Well contest season came and went in 2009 and I had forgotten all about this...then I got a google alert last night that my name had come up. It was for an Honorable mention in the abstract category of the Black & White Spider Awards. Well, lo and behold, I won an Honorable Mention in the Professional Abstract category. It's funny because I never got any kind of notification. Crazy...

I was out shooting between the storms this afternoon. It was actually really nice. A nice break form the days of rain we've had. As baseball (Little League) is starting up this caught my eye immediately. Actually, my oldest son pointed it out to me this morning on the way to school when the rain was still coming down pretty good. Unfortunately the Presido Fields are right in the San Diego River Basin. It looks like their about 3 feet deep....

This was shot for the Nov/Dec '09 Cover. It was a fun collaborative effort from AD Mark's very cool idea. And to make it even better, the subject, Steve Philpott, is the CIO at Amylin Pharmaceuticals, one of my favorite clients here in San Diego.

I toured the amazing Occidental Arts & Ecology Center recently. The constant rain and drizzle that day couldn't dampen the beauty and amazing energy of the grounds. 80 acres of the most amazing gardens, orchards and wild growth. The property has changed hands a number of times over the years, but in 1994, with long-term stewardship of this land in mind, Sowing Circle, the Sonoma Land Trust and the Warsh-Mott Legacy (the previous landowner) collaborated to author and endow an Organic Agricultural Easement to protect in perpetuity the organic gardens and orchards from any development or any use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
I learned just enough about Permaculture Design to pique my interest and leave me wanting more.

I just did a pro bono shoot for the local Chapter of the APA for our upcoming 7th Annual Portfolio Review. The concept from the guys over at Savacool Secviar called for a butcher shop and one of their clients is Cowboy Star, the hot new place downtown. And they just happen to have a butcher shop! Worked out great. Just wanted to say a big thanks to Jon at Cowboy Star for letting us us the place and Victor for standing in for us. And thanks to Kari Pheffer for assisting on the shoot.

We planted a pomegranate tree in our back yard a couple of years ago. We've always gotten a couple of fruit off the tree. This year it went nuts! It looked like it was going to fall over it had so many. So after much procrastination, I finally picked the over ripe, splitting fruit last night and got the seeds out for juicing. Looks like we'll have fresh pomegranate juice for the foreseeable future. Tasty!

Well, she got married a couple of weeks ago to a wonderful guy, Albert, at what has to have been one of the funnest and most picturesque weddings I've ever been to. Hands down, 2 of the best toasts, from the Bride's brother and the Groom's brother, I have ever heard at a wedding. 2 of the best!! At the same wedding!! From different families! I kid you not!!!
I shot a couple of wedding's early in my career and gave them up right away. I guess I'm just not wired to deal with shooting a wedding. But I do enjoy a good wedding and I like to bring a camera, just in case...

NASSCO Launch of the USNS Matthew Perry

I've shot a lot of Maritime stuff over the years, but one thing I have never experienced is the Christening and Launching of a ship. As of yesterday I can check that one off the list. NASSCO launched the USNS Matthew Perry yesterday at it's shipyard. It was a much more formal event than I expected and extremely choreographed...down to the launch time of 6PM to take advantage of the highest tide. It wasn't what I expected, but then again, it was an extremely exciting 60 seconds. Like the Video guy next to me said as the ship hit the water, "Well, that never gets old!" And I can image not...

I just saw the Richard Avedon : Portraits of Power show last night at the San Diego Museum of Art. My first reaction after walking through for a brief overview was "Where the hell are the American West" Portraits? So I went back and reread the synopsis of the show and realized this was all about Power and Politics. Okay, now that I had some context I was ready to dig in and check out the show. It is a really impressive body of work (as if that needed to be said), but what stuck out for me was to see "The Family" project commissioned by Rolling Stone in 1976. It was a year long project Avedon embarked on to photograph the polital and business leaders at the time of America's Bicentenial. 69 portraits of some of the greatest American leaders form the last half century. Greald Ford, President at the time, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, not yet President, Kissenger, Tip O'Niel, Lady Bird....It's such an awesome group of portraits. Most stand well on their own, but it's the group of all 69 prints hanging on top of each other in 3 rows of 23 that is so impressive. It immediately brought to mind Obama's People, shot by Nadav Kander earlier this year after Obama was elected, but before the innaguaration. I remeber being blown awy when I got The New York Times Magazine which featured the portraits by Kander. Avedon's project has proven to be seminal and I imagine Kander's will as well. I love the lack of propping, even less so in Avedon's. Probaby simply for the fact that we weren't carrying around so much stuff, like Iphone/blackberrys, 33 years ago. 2 great portrait artists at their best!

I'm pretty hot on the whole Social Media phenomena. I'm really curious where it's all going to go in the next several years. In the meantime, I'm really into Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
So like any good trade organization, APA San Diego is planning a Social Media event...a Roundtable in this case. APA /SD Roundtable's are our opportunity to get a small group of photographers to get together (no more than 15 attendees to facilitate participation by all) to discuss the issues of the day. In this case, what is Social Media and why the hell should I care!?!
So I volunteered to host the event and shoot the image for the E-Blast to promote the event. The image isn't exactly how I envisioned it, but I like it nonetheless. Thanks to Rachel Crawford of Mixture for letting me borrow her hands for the shot. In addition to working at Mixture, Rachel has a great line of Handmade jewelry and accessories. The Elixir

I've had a cough for about a week now...pretty annoying really.
So this is what Cindy came home with from the Chinese Pharmacy.
You have to boil it for half a day.
It smelled like hell and didn't taste any better.
I'd like to say it was the elixir I needed, but it didn't seem to do a thing.
That's not to say I wouldn't try it again or some other tonic.

Here's the recipe for those interested.

8 grams Panax ginseng
8 grams White attractylodes rhizome
8 grams Poria
8 grams Licorice
8 grams Rehmannia root
8 grams Ligusticum
8 grams Angelica sinensis
8 grams White peony root
4 grams Cinnamomum
4 grams Astragalas

Put the herbs in a glass or ceramic heatproof vessel with 4 cups of spring water. Bring to a boil, lower the heat, and simmer until the liquid is reduced by half. Strain the broth and reserve. Add 2 more cups of spring water to the herbs, boil, and simmer again until reduced by half. Strain the broth, add it to the first brew, and discard the herbs. Divide the broth into 3 equal doses and drink warm on an empty stomach in the early morning, in the afternoon, and in at bedtime.

I'm honored to announce that we were selected in the Corporate Design Category of the 2009 PDN Photo Annual for our work at the San Diego International Airport. We worked with the talented folks over at MJE Marketing to create this body of work for the Airport's 2007 Annual Report. Thanks to everyone involved! It was some late nights and even more seriously early mornings. Nothing like being out on the tarmac as the city and Airport start coming to life! The Airport is always one of my favorite projects every year.

I decided to take the back way home from the Palm Springs Photo Festival. It takes a helluvalot longer but it's a good way to stave off the utter boredom of I-15, or any Interstate for that matter... Also a good opportunity to do some shooting.

I've been doing some work for The Tilted Kilt here in downtown San Diego. So in addition to shooting a number of scenarios for Ads and Collateral I did some portraits of some of the girls. The lighting turned out a little harsher than what I wanted for this first series, but I really like a how these 4 turned out. We'll see how the next batch turns out...Thanks to everyone at the Kilt. So here was the plan...but you know how that always goes. I wanted to get a few of my Yashica Portraits of the boys over the weekend. Same style as usual. They know the drill. Over here, chin down, no smile, stop acting goofy...So I shot a few of them before they went off to a party in LA on Saturday afternoon. And then again on Sunday afternoon. I thought I got what I wanted. Always hard to tell for sure with the old YashicaMat. But it felt good.

366 and Moving Forward

It's been several months now since I was immersed in taking a picture every day, striving for One Great Image every 24 hour cycle. I kept it up for abut a week and a half into 2009 out of sheer habit, I think. But then something quirky happened that I didn't have a "usable" image so I stopped. Just like that.... and It Was, just like that. I was surprised how quickly and easily it was over.
And now the big show at Subtext has had it's run. It was a great success with great exposure. I'm continuing to put the show out there where appropriate and am looking for more opportunities. 366 | 08 will always live here, but it's time to move on to new and exciting things!

Well we had a packed crowd for the opening of 366 | 08 at Subtext on Friday night. A great turnout and an even better vibe. Everyone seemed to love the show, the music, and Subtext's new space. But there was a point on Thursday night and early Friday morning when I wasn't sure what to expect for the Opening.

As a big time tea lover I've been waiting for this place to open for a year now. It was well worth the wait. It reminds me of our trips to NYC or SF and seeking out the tea shops in Chinatown. Only this one is right over in South Park!!! If you're in the area, or not, make a special trip over: Halcyon Tea location and hours. He's got some wonderful teas, a wealth of knowledge, and the vibe is so chill you'll have no idea you've already spent an hour there, more relaxed and better for it...

Well today was Frank's 10th Birthday and he has been bugging us for about 2 years now to Face Plant into his Birthday Cake. So this year we finally relented and let him go for it! Of course we had a back up dessert for all the guests. When asked after the Face Plant, was it was everything he thought it would be, Frank proclaimed it "Insane!"
